Film and TV actress Ssujata Mehta shares how she loves to prep well for her roles. She said, “My process starts with understanding the script, the story and my character's relationship with others. I dive into the character's past, present, and future. Earlier, we didn’t get scripts in advance; everything was spontaneous, including dialogues and scenes. Today, there’s more structure with workshops and rehearsals. I highlight my dialogues, mark emphasis points, and discuss my approach with the director. For example, in Yatim, I did a lot of improvisation, and in the play Rashomon, I played a grey role. Whether it's drama, TV, or films, I commit fully to understanding and experimenting with the character."
Ssujata, who has been part of films like Pratighaat, Yatim, Gunahon Ka Devta believes in staying grounded, connecting with people and living a simple life. “I don’t like living in a shell. I often travel using rickshaws or trains, interact with strangers, and explore new places,” she said. “Nature helps me stay grounded, as does Vipassana meditation. At home, we don’t use a dining table — we sit on the floor to eat. I also ensure I eat meals with my staff when I’m alone. These practices remind me of my roots and keep me connected to reality,” she added.
The actress shared how she enjoys visiting her native place. She said, “My native place is Bhavnagar, and I make it a point to visit once a year, offer prayers, and perform a hawan at my kuldevi temple. I also enjoy talking to people of all age groups, from newborns to elders. Their blessings and perspective about various things enriches my life."
She added, “My family is connected with Burma; my nanaji started business in Burma. Visiting Burma to pay gratitude to my nanaji was a fulfilling experience. Knowing where I come from keeps me grounded and gives me clarity during confusing times. Learning from seniors and respecting traditions is something I deeply value, and I am grateful to my parents as well,” Ssujata said.
