Sooni Taraporevala to direct Siddharth Roy Kapur's new musical drama on Mumbai's 'Ballet Boys'

She has already made a VR documentary on the same subject.
Award-winning writer Sooni Taraporevala has reportedly been signed to direct Siddharth Roy Kapur's film on the

ballet boys

of Mumbai,

Amiruddin Shah and Manish Chauhan

. Titled 'Ballet Boys', it will capture their journey from the slums of the city to prestigious global ballet Institutes like London’s Royal Ballet Academy and the Oregon Ballet Theatre. The only Indians to have ever done so, the film will also include the roles played by their Israeli-American mentor

Yehuda Maor

and their families to help them overcome their circumstances and achieve this feat.

Sooni, known for her writing in films like on 'Salaam Bombay', 'Mississippi Masala' and 'The Namesake', has already directed a VR documentary on the same subject, titled '

Yeh Ballet

', for Anand Gandhi’s Memesys Lab.

Siddharth was moved by the story of the boys after seeing the documentary and reading about the boys. Having worked with Sooni on 'The Namesake' earlier, he immediately decided to collaborate with her for the upcoming musical drama. He reportedly said that he has always admired the writer's works and adds that she has outdone herself with 'superb script' that she has written on the “Ballet Boys”. The filmmaker also added that they intend to bring the same kind energy and cinematic spectacle to this project. The film is also special since it also deals with an unfamiliar western dance form like ballet. He believes that the film will resonate the audiences around the world.

Sooni reportedly also expressed admiration for Sid's works and and hopes that the collaboration will be successful and highlights the fact that talent can sometimes be found in the most unlikely places.

The film will have dialogues by Mayur Puri (writer of 'ABCD'/'ABCD2'), music by the hit duo Sachin-Jigar, choreography by phenomenal Shiamak Davar and ballet sequences by Yehuda Maor and Cindy Jourdain. It is slated to go on the floors January 2019
