Actor Sohum Shah, who won critical acclaim for his performance in 'Ship Of Theseus', is turning presenter for 'Gulabi Gang', a documentary directed by Nishtha Jain. It will be the first documentary to be released in theatres across India.
The film chronicles the life and times of Sampat Pal Devi, the founder of Gulabi Gang, which is an organisation that works for women’s empowerment.

The gang fights against gender violence, caste oppression and widespread corruption in Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh. Shah was overwhelmed after seeing the film. He says, “I found it highly entertaining. It spreads awareness about a disturbing issue, and is extremely relevant to Indian society. Cinema is a great medium to educate ourselves.”
The actor adds that by giving the documentary a theatrical release, the aim is to champion an alternative voice. “I hope it throws light on the importance of documentaries and changes the way the Indian audiences look at them,” he says.
Gulabi Gang, presented by Recyclewala Films, releases February 21.
