Its an uneasy, uncanny feeling, talking to Soha Ali Khan about her new film Mumbai Meri Jaan. That talks about the aftermath of the Mumbai train blasts, just as the news of the Bangalore and Ahmedabad bomb blasts trickle in. Shes blissfully unaware at first, but when we tell her, she immediately switches on the TV. We are the number one victim of terrorism in the world.
Its no wonder so many lives are being affected. I play a TV reporter in the film whos very driven and passionate about her work. I am keen to know if the media finds its portrayal accurate, says Soha.
It sounds like a serious film and Soha says, Its a film that will emotionally touch people, but its an entertainer. I am a huge fan of mindless comedies, the ones where you just leave your brain behind at home and double up with laughter and munch on popcorn. I think actors are entertainers and we are supposed to be breaking all the rules. Please, please if you want to learn something, go to school, ask your parents. But cinema is entertainment.
So is that the reason why she did those very sexy, teasing shoots with a magazine? Says Soha, It was such a fun photo-shoot, a tongue-in-cheek kind of a thing. As actors, we need to experiment with our roles and looks, dont we? Ok, so how it going down with her family? Its not easy to shock my mom. After all, she donned a bikini in the 70s for her film. She was like, Soha, I have heard a lot about the pictures, but they are quite tame. Thank god, for a
mom like that. And well, I havent discussed the shoot with my father and I am not intending to do that either, says Soha candidly.
Her brother, is he very protective about her? Brothers, all over the world are protective about their sisters, especially if the sisters are younger. Saif is the same. But he respects and trusts the choices I have made. He knows I havent done anything suicidal with my life or career, says Soha.
Actually, we tell Soha, its the opposite. She made a very sensible decision to quit the banking job and make a beeline for Bollywood. When I tell my father that it was in my and Saifs blood to be actors, he quips well, it is in your blood to be cricketers as well! I would like to tell him, my moms gene is stronger, but knowing that my father is a Pathan, I dont, laughs Soha. So what is she doing next? I know that wikipedia mentions that I am doing a film called Airport, but I dont know where that comes from. What I am doing is: Dil Kabadi, Tera Kya Hoga Johnny and Dhundhte Reh Jaoge, she affirms.
And, what else? What does Soha like to spend her money on? Oh, I love footwear. I have got 1,000 of them, but I am forever wearing my brown chappals. I and mum also share the same foot size and so, I have inherited a lot of stylish sandals from her, but then you see, I am dedicated to my chappals. I also love being on a beach and getting tanned, says Soha.
Is she willing to lend the 1,000 pairs? Soha isnt telling!
