Ask Sid Makkar if he’s anything like his honest, mild-mannered and introverted character Satyakaam in Ghar Ki Laxmi Betiyaan and he says with a laugh, “Not 100 per cent, but yes, I do have some aspects of Satyakaam in me.”
But considering that the youth of this country are finding it a little tough to relate to the characters in today’s soaps, how’s he, a young guy, able to relate to it?
“For me, it was about relating to the character and Satyakaam is not a very difficult character. I’m just trying to be true to my job and do it honestly. Yes, it might be harder for the youth to relate to him, considering today’s programming, but at the end of the day, I’m doing a job,” he says.
Before joining the telly industry, it was theatre that Sid started his acting career with.
“The makers of Betiyaan... saw me in the play Lift Karade and approached me. I have also worked in a play called Art,” he says. And theatre continues to exercise its charm over Sid.
“Television is my bread and butter. When I was approached for Satyakaam’s role, I wanted to know if I would be paid well,” he says.
So if it’s not TV he aspires to do forever, where does he see himself five years down the line?

“I hope I won’t be in television five years later. My passion is theatre and films is where I want to be ultimately,” he says.
Having said that, Sid says that he respects TV.
“It’s given me the kind of recognition that a lead role in a film opposite a star couldn’t get me,” he says.
Sid had starred opposite Mallika Sherawat in Kis Kis Ki Kismat. He has also acted in films like Offshore, Postcards and Chaurahein.
“I’m interested in new-age cinema,” says Sid.
The actor has been receiving a number of TV offers and he’s ready to take on another project. “I should be starting something by next month,” he informs.
