The filmmaker was a renowned Indian filmmaker known for his significant contributions to Indian parallel cinema. His career spanned several decades, during which he directed acclaimed films such as 'Ankur' (1973), 'Nishant' (1975), 'Manthan' (1976), and 'Bhumika' (1977). These works were pivotal in the new wave film movement of the 1970s and 1980s, characterised by their realism and social commentary.

Benegal's films often explored complex themes and featured strong female characters, earning him multiple National Film Awards. He also created notable documentaries and television series, including 'Bharat Ek Khoj' (1988) and 'Samvidhaan' (2014), which focused on India's Constitution. His legacy includes a rich filmography that has influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences alike.

Shyam Benegal's last directorial feature was 'Mujib: The Making of a Nation', released in 2023. This film tells the story of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh. Known for his impactful storytelling, Benegal's work has greatly influenced Indian cinema.
