Shruti Haasan reveals her parents Kamal Haasan and Sarika didn't allow temple visits, secretly discovered faith with grandfather: 'Shortly after that, he passed away'
Shruti Haasan, daughter of iconic actors Kamal Haasan and Sarika, recently shared insights into her journey of faith, revealing how spirituality has become a cornerstone of her strength and identity. Unlike many, Shruti's faith wasn’t a family inheritance but a deeply personal discovery.
Speaking to Pinkvilla, Shruti credited her resilience to her belief in a higher power. “My faith in God,” she said when asked what has made her strong in life. Elaborating further, she noted, “My home is more of an atheist home. My mum is spiritual but my dad, never. So we never had the concept of God while growing up, I discovered it myself. I very much believe in the power of God and that power of God has taken me through and to many things in my life.”
Kamal Haasan, known for his staunch atheist beliefs, and Sarika, inclined toward spirituality, provided an open environment at home, but Shruti's spiritual journey took a unique route. She humorously shared how her exploration of faith began covertly, saying, “Chori chori (secretly).”
Recalling a childhood memory, Shruti revealed, “In our colony, there was a lane where I used to ride my bicycle. I was asked not to ride near the main gate… For some reason, every morning I would hear the church and temple bells around the same time, and I would wonder which one I would reach first. The temple was too far away from my house, so I used to visit the church once a week. Nobody at home came to know at least for 5-6 months. The thing with kids is that if you tell them not to do something, they do it even more. In my case, it was religion.”
One of Shruti’s most cherished memories involves her late grandfather and her first visit to a temple. “My first visit to a temple was with my grandfather who took me to a temple in Chennai. He had told me not to tell my father that he had brought me to a temple. Shortly after that, my grandfather passed away. I always had a connection with my grandfather and a temple which became like a spiritual connection,” she shared.
