Shekhar Kapur reviews 'Dhurandhar' after its OTT release, reveals why he didn't watch it in theatres
After making waves at the box office, 'Dhurandhar' has finally released on OTT. Many people who missed watching the Aditya Dhar directorial in theatres have now seen it on OTT and dropped reviews. 'Mr India' director Shekhar Kapur also has now shared his insights on the film. He took to social media on Monday and applauded the director. He also revealed the reason behind not watching the film in theatres.
He took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “Finally saw #Dhurandhar on Netflix. Terrific storytelling and very high level of performances even from minor roles. Director #AdityaDhar deserves all the praise he’s getting. Congratulations producer #jyotideshpande and looking forward to #Dhurandhar2.”
Shekhar praised the film’s storytelling and performances, while also expressing excitement for the sequel. Responding to a fan who commented on how rare it is for a first installment to feel complete while still setting up a sequel — "It is rare for a 'Part 1' to stand on its own while setting up a 'Part 2.' Usually, they feel incomplete. Dhurandhar managed to deliver a full meal while promising a banquet. The scale of Indian storytelling just leveled up." Shekhar simply replied, “Agree.”
Another user asked whether the Netflix version felt diluted due to censorship. Addressing the concern, Shekhar wrote, “It did not feel censored except for swear words .. but it was obvious what the characters were saying.”
Several fans also questioned why the filmmaker had missed watching 'Dhurandhar' during its theatrical run in December. Clarifying the reason, Shekhar explained, “I wish I had .. but it want available in theatres where I am.” He further added, “I am in Dubai where it did not release.” When asked if he would watch Dhurandhar 2 on the big screen, he responded, “If it releases where I am.”
For context, Dhurandhar was banned in six Gulf nations — Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE — which prevented its theatrical release in the region. Despite that, the film managed to have a worldwide collection of more Rs 1328 crore worldwide.
'Dhurandhar' stars Ranveer Singh, Sara Arjun, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R Madhavan and Rakesh Bedi. Set against the backdrop of international espionage, the story follows an Indian spy sent to Pakistan’s Lyari area to infiltrate a Baloch gang. Ranveer essays the role of Hamza Ali Mazari, also known as Jaskirat Singh Rangi.
