Directed by K Shankar, this film saw Shammi Kapoor playingthe ‘foreign return’ son of a Maharaja, in other words, theRajkumar.
In this picture, captured by ace lensman ShyamAurangabadkar, the late Shammi Kapoor, also known as the Elvis Presley of Indiais seen getting ready to do push-up dance step, better known as the Maar Daalastep with his co-star Sadhana.
The makeshift sand, thepapier-mâché rocks as the backdrop and the spotboy notwithstanding,Shammi Kapoor gets on the floor to get his hands dirty with some hi-energy movesfor the song.
The picture stands out for two reasons: one, ShammiKapoor and the romance in his persona and two, the stark difference between the1960s film sets and the elaborate designer locations chalked out for filmstoday. The location isn’t real. The sand has been brought in gunny bagsthat can be seen at certain places.
A spot boy is standing behind theactors. And there’s a stepladder placed too close for comfort. Yet, theactors don’t seem to be distracted. In fact, Shammi Kapoor and Sadhanaseem to be totally engrossed in their act.
And even the make believerocks and sand made us go droopy eyed and romantic. Thanks to the charisma ofthe man named Shammi Kapoor.
