Shammi Kapoor was unhappy with his ‘Yahoo’ image in films; Bina Ramani reveals
Author and entrepreneur Bina Ramani has revealed a lesser-known side of late Bollywood legend Shammi Kapoor.
Speaking about the legendary actor's life and personality, she said the actor deeply disliked his famous ‘Yahoo’ image, even though it made him a huge star. According to Ramani, Shammi Kapoor was very different in real life and felt uncomfortable playing loud, playful roles on screen.
In an interview with ANI, Bina shared that Shammi once told her clearly that he hated the ‘Yahoo’ image. “He said, I am doing this because my producers are making money. They’re making money,” Ramani recalled. She explained that the actor felt stuck in those roles and continued doing them mainly for financial reasons and because the audience loved them.
According to Bina Ramani, Shammi Kapoor felt that his stardom forced him into a fixed pattern. While the roles brought fame and money, they did not reflect who he truly was.
He clarified that it was “nothing Tarzan-like, only an expression of joy.” He also shared a funny memory about the launch of Yahoo India, where his song was played as he entered. Laughing about people thinking he owned the company, he once said, “Had I owned Yahoo company, I would have been in the US.”

Doing it for the audience
Bina Ramani said Shammi Kapoor fully understood the gap between his real personality and what the film industry expected from him. He knew that once an image became successful, there was no escape from it. “He said, ‘I’m the only one, this role seems to be fitting, so I have to do it for the audience. And I’m signed one after the other, and they’re all roles like this. So I romanced the heroines,’” she shared.According to Bina Ramani, Shammi Kapoor felt that his stardom forced him into a fixed pattern.
