Shaji has started the shoot of his magnum opus Kutti Sranku, in Kuttanad and other areas in the backwaters of Kerala. It features Mammootty as a boat driver who operates goods boat (charakku kapal) between Kondugnaloor and Kollam, through the backwaters of Kerala.
The film is set in the late 50's and is about the life and times of the boat driver and his relationship with three women in three different islands enroute. Kamalini Mukerjee, Padmapriya and Srilankan actress Meenakumari play the three women in Kutti Sranku's life. Anil Ambani's Reliance Entertainment's Big Pictures is foraying into Malayalam with this film in association with Shaji N. Karun.
For the first time Shaji has employed a camerawoman Anjali Shukla, a Pune film institute graduate, and a former assistant of the Santosh Sivan to do the camera work The script for the film is penned jointly by the director and noted British writer Farukh Dhondy.
