This being the Golden Jubilee year of Shaheed (1965), which saw veteran actor Manoj Kumar playing Shaheed Bhagat Singh, a special premiere of the film will be held by the channel owning its rights. The screening, expected to be held on March 23, will also pay tribute to the martyr, who was hanged on that day. Manoj Kumar confirmed the news, saying, “It took four years’ research to prepare for that role.
I visited newspaper offices and read old magazines to obtain information about the martyr. I even told my producer, Kewal Kashyap, that he should make another film, but he refused.”
The actor also recalls travelling to Chandigarh in Bhagat Singh’s get-up to seek his mother, Vidyawati’s approval. “She was hospitalised and was refusing to take medicines. After seeing my close resemblance to Bhagat Singh, the doctors asked me to try and convince her. She finally relented and even approved of me in the role,” he says.
