Shah Rukh Khan as Coach Kabir Khan in 'Chak De India!'

There is no better way to start the list off than with Shah Rukh Khan's iconic character as a coach in the film 'Chak De India!' The talented actor played the role of a former hockey player and captain of the India men's national field hockey team, who comes back to the sport years later to coach the Indian national women's hockey team. The film and the character live in our hearts rent-free due to its theme as well as King Khan's acting skills that brought justice to the plot.

3/7

Amitabh Bachchan as Coach Vijay Barse in 'Jhund'

Amitabh Bachchan played another memorable and impactful role as retired sports teacher Vijay Barse in the 2022 sports film 'Jhund'. The film follows Barse as he assembles a group of troublemaking children from a slum and forms a football team. He also started training them for a national tournament as well. What makes Amitabh's character so powerful is due to the fact that the film is based on the real-life story of Vijay Barse, CEO of NGO Slum Soccer.

4/7

Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat in 'Dangal'

'Dangal' is one of the best sports films that portrays Aamir Khan in a powerful and inspirational role. The movie is based on Mahavir Singh Phogat's dream of winning a gold medal for his country. Even though the former wrestler is unable to achieve it himself, he breaks social stigmas surrounding gender and becomes his daughter's personal coach to train them for the Commonwealth Games. This film is filled with themes of love, family, and passion in a sports-centric setting and will leave you wanting more.

5/7

Ajay Devgn as Syed Abdul Rahim in ‘Maidaan’

This film pays ode to the legendary Syed Abdul Rahim, more lovingly known as Rahim Saab, who was the football coach and manager of the Indian national team from 1950 to 1963, until the day he passed away. The film is a biographical retelling of the coach’s life and how, without much resources, political turmoil and other interferences still helped the Indian national team come out on top. Ajay Devgn’s acting skills provided proper justice to Rahim Saab’s portrayal on screen and established it as a great sports biopic. Not only that, but fans got the chance to see Devgn in a new and unique persona on screen.

6/7

Abhishek Bachchan as Padam ‘Paddy’ Singh Sodhi in ‘Ghoomer’

Abhishek Bachchan played the powerful and inspirational role of the failed Test cricketer Padam ‘Paddy’ Singh Sodhi in this sports drama film. The plot follows Anina "Ani" Dixit as she loses all hope of becoming a champion batter in cricket after losing her right hand in a freak accident. Even though she wishes to give up, Paddy does not let her and believes that she still has what it takes. He inspires her to turn her talent to a new aspect of cricket, bowling. This powerful tale of hope and surviving against all odds is a must-watch, and Abhishek’s acting in this unique role makes the film even better.

7/7

R Madhavan as Aditya ‘Adi’ Tomar in ‘Saala Khadoos’

R Madhavan’s character in this film is a polar opposite of what you would think of when imagining a sports coach. Even while following unconventional characteristics, the character Aditya managed to work on screen, while Madhavan’s acting made the entire film. The story follows Aditya ‘Adi’ Tomar, a failed boxer who couldn’t continue his career due to internal politics. He then later becomes a government coach and is transferred to Chennai to find boxing talent in women. The story follows as he discovers Ezhil Madhi, a fishmonger who he trains to become a champion. Madhavan’s acting skills, along with the movie’s inspirational plot, make it one of the best watches if you’re looking for sports films.
