Since its release on ZEE5, Mrs. has garnered widespread attention for its compelling depiction of patriarchy within domestic spaces. The film, a Hindi adaptation of the Malayalam hit The Great Indian Kitchen, features
Sanya Malhotra in the role of Richa, an aspiring dancer whose ambitions are stifled after marriage as she becomes entangled in relentless household chores.
During a conversation with India Today, veteran actor
Kanwaljit Singh, who portrayed Richa’s father-in-law in the film, reflected on his experience after watching the final cut. He admitted that his primary memory from the shoot had been centered around the numerous meals he had eaten on set. However, having worked on multiple projects since then, he had distanced himself from his character’s actions. Upon viewing the film, he was left deeply unsettled by his character’s behavior, which prompted him to approach Sanya Malhotra and extend an apology.
Singh recalled that Sanya appeared surprised by his reaction and inquired about the reason behind his apology. He explained that he had overlooked the extent to which his character had troubled hers in the film, and upon realization, he felt a strong sense of regret. He went on to praise Malhotra’s performance, describing it as exceptional, and noted that witnessing her character’s struggles on screen had been a distressing experience for everyone involved.
TDirected by
Arati Kadav, the film has received widespread appreciation from critics and audiences alike for its unfiltered storytelling, powerful performances, and emotional depth. Alongside Sanya Malhotra, the movie also features Nishant Dahiya in a significant role. The narrative has sparked vital discussions, particularly among women, many of whom have lauded it for its honest representation of the challenges faced within household dynamics.
The success of Mrs. has also led to a renewed interest in Sanya Malhotra’s previous projects, with her earlier films Pagglait and Meenakshi Sundareshwar climbing into Netflix’s Top 10 Movies in India, securing the 4th and 5th positions, respectively.
Director Arati Kadav acknowledged this ripple effect and expressed her astonishment on social media. She remarked that it was rare for a single film to influence the ranking of an actor’s previous works, adding that she felt deeply grateful and blessed.
With Mrs. continuing to make waves and reaffirming Sanya Malhotra’s acting prowess, the film not only stands as a cinematic success but also cements the actress’s growing influence in the industry.
