Sanya Malhotra responds to men’s rights group criticism of ‘Mrs’: ‘Jaha story pahunchni thi, pahunch gayi’
Sanya Malhotra’s portrayal in ‘Mrs.’ has garnered widespread acclaim, as she skillfully depicts a woman who silently resists the pressures of domestic patriarchy. Critics have lauded her subtle performance and the film’s ability to transform everyday household challenges into a compelling narrative about oppression. This Hindi remake of The Great Indian Kitchen also faced criticism from certain men’s groups, notably the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), who claimed the movie promotes a biased feminist perspective.
Controversy over portrayal of household chores
Some critics claimed the film incorrectly depicted everyday household tasks like cooking, cleaning, and laundry as oppressive, implying that the main character’s rebellion was merely due to her unwillingness to cook for her family after marriage. In contrast, many viewers challenged this view, emphasizing that the movie’s message was not about rejecting domestic duties but about highlighting the absence of freedom and choice available to women.
Sanya Malhotra’s response to backlash
Speaking to News18, Sanya reacted to the backlash by explaining that the problem isn’t that the protagonist didn’t want to cook. She was cooking and even serving it nicely but was getting zero appreciation from the family. The problem started when she wanted to do something else and showed the family that she is capable of managing the household and also wants to go out and pursue something she loves. However, she wasn’t allowed to do that and wasn’t given the freedom. The story has reached the people it needed to reach.
Upcoming projects for Sanya Malhotra
On the work front, Sanya’s upcoming projects include the romantic comedy ‘Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari’ from Dharma Productions, scheduled for release on October 2, 2025, and the offbeat Netflix comedy ‘Toaster’, where she stars opposite Rajkummar Rao. Additionally, she is reportedly involved in a high-profile international action-comedy produced by Aagaaz Entertainment and directed by Kapil Sharma. She will also feature in a gripping thriller alongside Anurag Kashyap and Bobby Deol. Her film ‘Bandar’, directed by Anurag Kashyap, is slated to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025.
