The Delhi High Court refused to hear IRS officer Sameer Wankhede’s defamation plea against Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies series The Ba**ds of Bollywood*, citing lack of jurisdiction. Wankhede, alleging reputational harm and insulting scenes, said the case isn’t dismissed and he will move an appropriate court to continue his fight.
On Thursday, the Delhi High Court refused to take up IRS officer Sameer Wankhede’s defamation case against the web series ‘The Ba***ds of Bollywood’, produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt Ltd. Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav held that the court had no territorial jurisdiction in the matter and advised Wankhede to approach a court that does.

Sameer Wankhede stays determined

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Sameer clarified that the case has not been dismissed, countering any claims suggesting otherwise. “It has not been dismissed. I have been asked to approach a proper forum. Let the order be uploaded, then I will take a call on when to do it. This has not demotivated me at all, it’s just an order to approach the appropriate court. I will do the needful and keep fighting for justice”, he said.

Allegations of personal fight

Wankhede alleged in his complaint that the series, written and directed by Aryan Khan, was intentionally crafted to damage his reputation and settle old scores stemming from Aryan’s 2021 narcotics case arrest. Accusing Red Chillies Entertainment and Netflix of defamation, the IRS officer sought Rs. 2 crore in damages, vowing to donate the amount to the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital.

Sameer Wankhede flags obscene gesture from the series

Waknhede's petition also alleged that the series includes a scene where a character makes an obscene gesture after saying ‘Satyamev Jayate’. He argued that this act amounts to a serious breach of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
However, the court ruled that the complaint must be returned as it lacked territorial jurisdiction.
