Salman Khan hit-and-run case: Actor's bail on the day of conviction justified, says Supreme Court

On Monday, February 15, the Supreme Court heard a petition by Delhi lawyer, M L Sharma, seeking probe into the Salman Khan's acquittal in the infamous 2002 hit-and-run case, which resulted in the death of one and caused severe injuries to four others. In his argument, Sharma questioned the Bombay High Court order that granted Khan an interim bail within a few hours after he was convicted by the Sessions Court and sentenced to five year imprisonment. However, the bench Justice J S Khehar and Justice R Banumathi, stated that the order was justified and done as per law.Salman Khan hit-and-run case: SC junks plea for CBI probe into expensesThe bench reasoned that since the actor was not provided with a copy of the conviction order, he could not be sent to jail. Quashing Sharma's argument, the bench said, 'You (lawyer) need to study law. Nobody can be sent to jail without a conviction order' that is the law' and that is how he (Salman) got bail.'Click here for more Bollywood videosOn May 6, 2015, Salman was convicted in all charges against him by the Sessions Court and was sentenced to a 5-year rigorous imprisonment. The actor then contested the SC's decision and moved the High Court the same day.
