Sakshi Gulati may have made her debut in Ram Gopal Varmas Contract, but according to her, the role is as real as it gets. A Miss India finalist, Sakshi has walked on many prestigious ramps before setting her sights on Bollywood. To spice up things, she chose to do a hatke role in her debut film. Her first meeting with RGV resulted in Contract. And the actress is happy that she got to do some dishum-dishum in the film too!
Apart from Urmila Matondkar, none of Ram Gopal Varmas female protegees have been able to make it big in Bollywood.
So what made you opt for this film?
I think it all depends on how good you are at performing. The choices they have made are responsible for their fate. I am no one to comment on what went wrong, but I hope I take things easy and take one step at a time. Ramus such a great director that working with him is an experience every actor should have. Plus hes at his best when he making a movie based on underworld. There was no reason for me to be sceptical.
Tell us something about your role in the film.I play a girl whos very much a part of the underworld. She knows how things work here and thats the reason shes a bit emotionless. But the character has a range of emotions. Theres the love angle too. But what really excited me was the stunts that I got to do. Handling fake guns wasnt a problem because I come from an army background and have handled the real machines.
RGVs films are often hero-centric. Werent you worried that you wont be noticed?I think the fact that I got an opportunity to work with a director like him was a big thing. I have no connections in the film industry and for a newcomer to get an opportunity like this is extremely difficult. I grabbed the movie the moment it was offered to me. I agree that the male protagonist has more to do in the film, but my role is equally important.
Most of RGVs heroines are linked to him. You seem to be an exception...(Laughs) I guess, I am lucky. I have immense respect for Ramu as a filmmaker. But if you talk about my private life, its very boring! And Ramus a thorough gentleman. I had a great time working with him.
A lot of actresses in Bollywood today come from an army background. Is there a reason for their success in the glam world? Its all about being adaptable. We lead nomadic lives. We move from one city to another, so we learn to get along with all sorts of people, which helps us become independent at a very early age. It boosts your confidence and thats one quality all girls have, be it Sushmita Sen or Lara Dutta.
