Saif Ali Khan stabbing case: Insurance claim sparks controversy over alleged preferential treatment

The stabbing incident involving Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan has taken a new turn, with the Association of Medical Consultants Mumbai raising concerns about the swift approval of his insurance claim. The controversy centers around the alleged preferential treatment given to Saif by Niva Bupa Health Insurance in processing a Rs 36 lakh claim for his treatment at Lilavati Hospital, according to IANS.

Saif sustained six stab wounds, two of them critical, while defending his house from an intruder in his Bandra residence early Thursday morning. The incident, which occurred at 2:15 am, saw Saif confront the burglar, reportedly a Bangladeshi national, who has since been arrested.

While Saif’s bravery has been lauded, the insurance claim process has sparked a debate about fairness. Health insurance expert Nikhil Jha shared a tweet that highlighted concerns:

“The normal process is to ask for an FIR copy in medicolegal cases. The insurance company waived off this requirement and immediately approved the cashless request for Rs 25 lacs. The final bill, apparently Rs 36 lacs, was also approved. The surgery and stay for 4 days does not justify the huge bill and the prompt approval.”

Jha further added in his Tweet, “If this was any normal person, the company would have applied reasonable and customary charges and not paid the claim. IRDAI should answer why Niva Bupa gave preferential treatment to a celebrity and made it hard for normal people to get a claim?”

The Association of Medical Consultants Mumbai has formally written to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), demanding an explanation. They emphasized that claims involving ordinary citizens often undergo stricter scrutiny and longer processing times.
