It was an avatar of Rabbi thats seen only in concerts. It wasnt the contemplative poet-mystic feel that youd get to see on his album covers. This Rabbi was a spirited, bindaas, music-crazy Dilli da munda, as he sang for DU and its crowd at the baton relay ceremony of the Commonwealth Youth Games held in the University recently.
He strummed and sang and jammed with the students like he was one of them, and enjoyed himself as much as the crowd enjoyed his performance.
And as he puts it himself, it was a homecoming in many ways for this DU graduate.
How was it like being back in DU?Performing for the students there, that too on such an important occasion, was overwhelming. DU is the place where I matured into an adult. It was the very same ground where I would go and sing almost everyday when I was in college. It was quite emotional for me to be able to perform in front of so many students.
What are your favourite anecdotes from your college years?I would say that each day of my life in DU is memorable. I was in Khalsa, and we would roam around outside Miranda House, watching the pretty girls. I dont think I missed any of the concerts in my college days. I still remember whenever Parikrama performed, I would eagerly attend their concerts. The DTC buses lined up in DU, the youth festivals, thousands of students coming in to attend them... and for us, the best opportunity to see some of the most gorgeous girls on campus!
Which songs did you sing on the occasion of the Commonwealth Youth Games baton relay ceremony? All of my songs are dedicated to DU and my life there, but theres one song on Delhi called Dilli that I have written, and that day, I dedicated that song to Delhi University.
How was it like performing with Palash Sen and Euphoria?Palash has been doing this for so many years. He has kept the flag of independent music flying high, and all credit to him. He is a great performer and he energises the crowd with his powerful performance. I have a lot of respect for him and it was an honour to perform alongside him and his band.
