Reewa Rathod takes her musical legacy forward

Music is in Reewa Rathod’s genes. The youngster — daughter of popular singers Roopkumar and Sunali Rathod and granddaughter of late Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod of the Dhrupad tradition — is all set to release her debut music video, Maula (One Above).
“When you put your heart and soul into something you love the most, it always pays off. All you need to do is believe in the One Above,” says Reewa, who loves blending different styles of music.
The youngster is thrilled that the songs of her first album have been penned by the legendary Gulzar. “I have sung and composed all songs for this album and I feel blessed and honoured to have him as my lyricist. He thinks I am the youngest composer he has worked with. Though the first track, Maula, is my favourite, I have tried to give different flavours to all other tracks.”
On his part, Gulzar saab says, “At her age, composing in itself is an art. Roopji and Sunali are very dear friends and I’m glad Reewa is taking their legacy forward. She is very talented and her new song is refreshingly amazing, because the name Maula refers to Sufism. However, the tune is very upbeat and contemporary. I wish her all the best.”
Reewa has many previous compositions to her credit, including one in a compilation of the label, Budhha-Bar. She has also composed a track for the Spanish film, Rastres De Sandal. The budding singer-composer is now excited about her upcoming project with Ustad Zakir Hussain, which also features world-renowned saxophonist Chris Potter.
