MUMBAI: Cricket has many fans and Raveena Tandon is one of them. The Bollywood actress has roped in cricket heroes in her social campaigns.
Raveena, who has participated in several campaigns like animal welfare and child relief, has pulled in Kapil Dev, Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar to make a series of public service messages for soldiers on TV.
"It''s very sweet of them to take out time and talk about our soldiers," she says.
The actress'' love for cricket doesn''t end here.
She even plans a movie titled Stumped, based on the Kargil War.
"I''m using a cricket match as a metaphor in the film. I''m drawing parallels between the spirit of fighting on a battlefield and on the cricket ground. Players and soldiers are warriors of two different kinds. The film is dedicated to the heroes of Kargil and we''re trying to capture the post-war spirit," Raveen says.
Raveena has incorporated first-hand experience in the film: "I had gone to Kargil after the war and spent three days with the soldiers. I brought back a souvenir - a 5-kg shell - and kept it in a glass case. I met a captain who had lost a leg. He was disappointed he''d lost a leg and not his head."
The Bollywood beauty is hurt when her frequent public appearances for Peta and Child Relief and You (CRY) are called publicity gimmicks.
Raveena says, "It''s at such times that I feel like giving it up and leading a carefree life. I''m doing all this, first because I believe in it, and second because I want to use my celebrity status to connect the common man with the bureaucrats, which is otherwise difficult. Moreover, I don''t have so much time to make public appearances. My production schedules are taking up most of my time."
Raveen, who is producing Pehchaan, says she finds no competition today.
"Everybody has carved out their own niche. If Tabu can handle sensitive roles with élan, I have a control on bold and assertive roles. Similarly, what Kareena can do I cannot, and vice versa."
The actress says she doesn''t miss the presence of any men in her life: "I don''t want any distractions. I would say my Mr Right is stuck in Mumbai''s infamous traffic jam."
afsana.ahmed@timesgroup.com
