The footballer took to his social media to share a video where he announced that he would retire from international football after the second round of World Cup qualifiers against Kuwait on June 6, 2024. Ranveer wrote a heartfelt comment on the video after Sunil announced the news, describing it as a ‘bittersweet moment’ and emphasizing how many people are inspired by the football player. He wrote, “ICON. HERO. LEGEND. A bittersweet moment for us, who have been touched and inspired by your greatness. Thank you for bringing us so much joy and glory, Captain. Love you forever!”
Siddharth also wished Sunil to have a great last match, writing, “Much love Sunil. Have a happy and strong last show. Full power man.” Cricketer Virat Kohli wrote, “My brother. PROUD.” While Ridhima Pandit left salute emojis under the video, Danish Sait commented, “Love you Sunil.” Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra wrote, “Captain. You are an inspiration, and your impact on Indian sport can never be erased.” Many admirers also wrote long, heartfelt remarks, considering his legacy and wishing him well on his retirement.
Earlier, Ranveer, who is an avid football fan, during an Instagram Live with Sunil said, “In the beginning, the year I had started watching the Premier League and Arsenal were playing the best football, so I immediately got attracted to it.”
On the work front, Ranveer will soon star in the upcoming third instalment of Farhan Akhtar's ‘Don’ franchise, replacing Shah Rukh Khan as the lead. The film will also star Kiara Advani. In addition, he will feature alongside Ajay Devgn and Deepika Padukone in Rohit Shetty's ‘Singham Again’.
