Randeep Hooda reveals selling his properties for aiding the 'Swatantra Veer Savarkar' production
'Swatantra Veer Savarkar,' the biopic centered around the life of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, not only marked Randeep Hooda's foray into directing but also showcased his dedication and sacrifices for the project. However, the journey was not without its challenges.
During a conversation with Ranveer Allahbadia on his podcast, Randeep revealed that he spent two years working on Swatantrya Veer Savarkar and went to great lengths to fund the film. He shared that he sold his properties to finance the biopic. He admitted that he was facing a cash crunch during the film's production phase.
"There were money-related problems. My father had saved up and bought a few properties for me in Bombay (Mumbai), and I let go of them for this film. I spent everything on this film. I felt I could not stop making this film. The kind of support this film should have received, it didn't get," he revealed.
Talking about the hurdles he encountered while making 'Swatantra Veer Savarkar', Randeep expressed his initial plans to release the film on significant dates like August 15 and January 26 but faced delays due to various production issues.
Discussing his transformation for the role, Randeep Hooda revealed that he underwent significant weight loss, bringing his weight down to 60 kilograms. However, the real challenge came during filming, as he struggled to maintain that weight. He directed the movie while depriving himself of proper meals, surviving on water, black coffee, and green tea initially. Eventually, he incorporated items like chilla, dark chocolate, and nuts into his diet. However, this drastic change in eating habits led to sleep problems, and he experienced a few falls on set due to fatigue and weakness.
Randeep Hooda remembered hurting his knee while riding his horse. He fell off the horse and twisted his leg under the knee, tearing three ligaments. Unable to move for two months, he started eating more due to stress. He followed a simple diet, eating only almond butter, coconut oil, and a few nuts each day to help him recover.
"I first wanted to release this film on August 15 last year. Then, I wanted to release it on January 26. I put all my effort into it but it didn't happen. The team which was associated with the film didn't intend to make a good-quality film. They only wanted to make a film. When I came in the capacity of a director, that quality was not going to work. So, there were many problems relating to the film's production," he said.
'Swatantra Veer Savarkar' collected Rs 11.35 crore in its first week. The movie though opened with mixed reviews, the audience has been lauding Randeep for his pure dedication to the craft, his body transformation, and his stellar performance.
'Swatantra Veer Savarkar' stars Ankita Lokhande opposite Randeep. Earlier as well, Randeep has been a part of a biopic - 'Sarbjit'.
