Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana rights acquired by Namit Malhotra

Nitesh Tiwari helmed ‘Ramayana’ has been hitting headlines for its starry cast. Beyond the casting details, the film is in the news as Namit Malhotra’s company DNEG is in the process of taking over the project.


In a public notice to the film trade, Namir’s lawyer stated, “Notice is hereby given to the public in general and film trade in particular that our clients are in the processing of acquiring the rights in relation to project Ramayana which is based on the epic Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and the script written by Shridhar Raghavan ("Project Ramayana").”


The statement further asserted, “These rights were vested in favour of Madhu Mantena by and under the consent terms filed before the Bombay High Court in Execution Application (L) No. 27808 of 2021 on 8th December, 2021 for the execution of the Arbitration Award dated 3rd March, 2021 ("Consent Terms") and have subsequently been assigned to our clients and the rights include the script authored by Shridhar Raghavan, the works developed by Nitesh Tiwari and all title registrations in respect of 'Ramayana". Which clearly states that Madhu Mantena will handover the rights to Namit Malhotra’s company.”


This epic is written by Sridhar Raghavan and stars Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Ram, while Sai Pallavi will play Sita. Names like Yash, Sunny Deol, Lara Dutta, Rakul Preet Singh and Amitabh Bachchan have also been associated with the project. However, the makers have not yet confirmed the cast. The film is set to go on floors in the summer of 2024. Buzz suggests that the makers will officially announce the movie on April 17, 2024, which coincides with the celebration of Ram's birth aka Ram Navami this year.
