The sudden death of gangster-politician Maddilacheruvu Surayanaryan (Suri) on Monday in Hyderabad, allegedly at the hands of his right-hand man Bhanu has left Ram Gopal Varma shattered. “To see a man whom I had interacted with so closely being gunned down and being taken away wrapped in a cloth was bad enough. What’s worse is the fact that the man who allegedly killed Suri is someone I knew from close quarters,” says the director.RGV adds, “I was more in touch with this guy who allegedly killed him.
In fact, it was Bhanu who had called me up to arrange for a screening of “Rakht Charitra” for Suri. He was Suri’s shadow. Every time I met Suri Bhanu was around – attentive, respectful and alert. Bhanu answered all of Suri’s calls. In fact I thought I knew Bhanu better than Suri. After this, I can’t bring myself to trust anyone anymore.”
He has become paranoid and suspicious now. “I made “Rakht Charitra” and moved on. This ghastly incident has dragged me back to the reality behind my film. Suri getting shot despite all his power and that too by his most trusted lieutenant, has left me speechless.”
He has also aborted all plans of making another “Rakht Charitra” sequel to continue the story. Says Ramu. “The process of violence and revenge is perpetual. There is no point in repeating the same pattern in cinema. The man who killed Suri was an outsider. There are branches and roots to the tradition of violence that cannot be controlled.”
The filmmaker doesn’t think the film “Rakht Charitra” had anything to do with Suri’s killing. “Agreed the characters came into the limelight because of the film. But the violence existed long before my film. We are living in violent times. And I am not sure I want to add to it in any way. Right now I am in a state of shock. Now they are taking footage from “Rakht Charitra”, adding it to the footage related to Suri’s killing and playing it on television. It’s eerie.”
