Rajkumar Hirani recently opened up about being criticised for one of the scenes in Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi starrer '3 Idiots'.
In conversation with Komal Nahta, Rajkumar admitted that he doesn’t always escape criticism. He recalled how a boy named Sachin, who works with Aamir Khan, pointed out that making fun of the less fortunate in the film didn’t sit well with him after watching it.
Rajkumar further explained that he never intended to mock poverty but was making a satirical reference to old black-and-white films. He wanted to highlight how those movies often depicted struggling families. However, after receiving feedback, he realized the scene could be interpreted differently and might impact some viewers.
The filmmaker also acknowledged that the comment made him more aware of the need to be careful. He reflected on how comedy often comes from others' misfortunes and how films naturally include humor at someone's expense. While creators should be mindful, he also believes audiences should take it in the right spirit.
The popular comedy-drama, written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani and co-written by Abhijat Joshi, was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. It featured Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh, Boman Irani, and Omi Vaidya in key roles. The film was a huge box office hit, earning Rs. 460 crore worldwide.
