Prabhas' 'Adipurush' to Akshay Kumar's 'Ram Setu': Bollywood's upcoming mythological films to look forward to

There is something indelibly appealing about myths, magic and monsters, of Gods waging war against evil and coming out victorious. These tales as old as time, with their enchanting realism, have always captured the imagination of filmmakers who have interpreted and retold the stories time and time again. With Prabhas now gearing up to play Lord Ram in 'Adipurush' and Akshay Kumar set to separate facts from fiction in 'Ram Setu', Deepika Padukone retelling the 'Mahabharat' from Draupadi's perspective, here are the upcoming mythological films to look forward to.

After giving the world 'Baahubali', Prabhas is now set to play the lead role in the upcoming film, 'Adipurush'. While the hunk will play Lord Ram, he will be joined on the big screen by Kriti Sanon, who will play Sita and Saif Ali Khan who has signed on the role of the antagonist, Lankesh.

The multilingual saga that is an onscreen adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana, will hit theatres in the country on August 11, 2022. It will be shot in Hindi and Telugu, Adipurush will be dubbed in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and several other foreign languages.

Deepika Padukone is set to play yet another powerful female character, Draupadi in her upcoming home production 'Mahabharat'. Apart from bringing the character to life on the big screen, the actress will also tell the tale as old as time through the eyes of the female protagonist and is also rumoured to release in multiple parts. The first part of the franchise was scheduled to hit the big screens on Diwali 2021.

"I'm absolutely thrilled and honoured to be essaying the role of Draupadi. I truly believe that it is the role of a lifetime,” Deepika said in a statement to Mumbai Mirror.

Akshay Kumar, who has been giving fans history lessons, with some blockbuster films, will now delve into the world of mythology for his next film, 'Ram Setu'. The star dropped the first poster on the festive occasion of Diwali and said, "Let us endeavour to keep alive the ideals of Ram in the consciousness of all Bharatiyas."

'Ram Setu' will be directed by Abhishek Sharma.

Kangana Ranaut is gearing up to flex her muscles as a director with the upcoming film 'Aparajitha Ayodhya'. Written by KV Vijayendra Prasad of 'Baahubali' fame, the film is rumoured to be about the Ram Mandir dispute and court cases. However, according to Kangana, "It’s not a controversial subject. I see it as a story of love, faith and unity, and above everything, it’s a story of divinity.”

Nitesh Tiwari recently announced his next ambitious directorial venture - 'Ramayana'. The upcoming film that has been in the works for a while, will be made on an estimated budget of Rs 500 crore. It is said to be a live-action trilogy that will be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu and will be shot in 3D.

Ramayana will reportedly be made with actors from the Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi and Punjabi industries, thus giving it a pan-India appeal. In an interview with TOI, Tiwari said, "We are still far from commencing the shooting process, which is why I feel we benefitted from this lockdown. Currently, we are busy with things that need to be worked on before actually starting to shoot. This is a prep-heavy film and needs a lot of careful planning and detailing, so we are focusing on that.”

Aamir Khan has been making headlines all year long, especially after reports stated that he is working on bringing the epic 'Mahabharat' to the big screen. What was initially touted to be a feature film, was later rumoured to be a multi-season franchise with a budget unlike any other. Reports previously indicated that the actor was working with veteran writer K V Vijayendra Prasad to pen the script for the epic mythological tale.

While the project was set to roll out this year, it didn't materialize for various reasons, prompting Aamir to finish work on his pending projects before diving into this saga.
