Little ones join percussionist Bickram Ghosh as he gets into the spirit of his yuppie number (TOI Photo)Percussionist Bickram Ghosh gets off the beaten track as he turns singer for a children’s film.
Why did you suddenly take to singing for the title track of Neel Rajar Deshe?
When I composed the number (Neel Rajar Deshe), I wanted to make it a trendy children’s
number with a lot of percussions and bol-scat.
1x1 polls
It’s almost hip-hop in essence.
The song required the singer to do some scatting with percussive sound. When I sang the demo, which I normally do for every number, everyone wanted me to retain my voice.
Do you have any formal training in vocal music?
I do not have any formal training. I have heard vocal music at home all the time. I had some very basic training from my mother when I was a child. The first time I ever sang was for Chants of India which was directed by Pt Ravi Shankar and produced by George Harrison.

Do you plan to join the bandwagon of classical instrumentalists who are turning vocalists these days?
Most classical instrumentalists, who have sang, in a classical mode. My song is completely the opposite. It’s a yuppie number. I don’t have any intention of turning into a classically driven singer.
But how would you differentiate between tabla player Subhankar Banerjee’s singing and yours?
As a vocalist, Subhankar tries to showcase prowess. That’s not my intention. My intent is to
create a fun number. In future, if I get a number that suits my voice, it’s fine.
After Little Zizou, if you were to choose between a career in Bollywood film music composition and doing music the Rhythmscape way, what will you do?
I don’t want to do run-of-the-mill Bollywood music. I wish to do few projects where I can create my brand. I am not looking at becoming a full-time Bollywood composer.
I am first and foremost a performer and I also enjoy composing music for films. Recently, I performed at the 53rd Commonwealth Parliamentary meet finalé in New Delhi. We are doing a show for UNICEF in Ahmedabad in November. I won’t do film music at the cost of my performance career.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali had spoken to you about doing the music for Saawariya. How similar is the film’s music to the numbers from your album, Sawariya?
The ‘pukar’ bears some likeness and the use of the ‘dha’ has a similarity with Rhythmscape. But besides this, I don’t find any direct similarity.
