Arjun Kapoor, the quintessential Bandra boy from Mumbai and
Parineeti Chopra, the hard core Punjabi girl from Ambala battle it out in the big city vs. small town debate.
Venue: Yash Raj Studios
Excerpts...Parineeti: We small town people are more balanced.
Arjun: She’s not even really from a small town. She’s studied in the UK.
Parineeti: So what? That just shows I’m talented like every other small town girl.
City people are more privileged.
Arjun: Are you saying people in big cities are rich and people in small towns are poor? This argument is baseless. Why did you come to Mumbai then?
PC: My work brought me here and if it wasn’t for work, I would still be living in Ambala. If you ask me in terms of lifestyle, I would choose Ambala over Mumbai. My dad still works in a small town and has been doing so for 40 years! In small towns we get best of both worlds. We have the best schools and yet have an 8:00 pm curfew. Life is more disciplined. Small city people are more self-reliant.
Arjun: Educational facilities are better here. Just because you have an 8 pm curfew doesn’t make you more disciplined. My uncle wakes up early every single day for work. People in cities too have deadlines. And how are small town people more reliant? People in big cities are also pushed to fend for themselves. They don’t get everything on a platter. They have to go and learn on their own. Discipline exists in Mumbai too. The point is we limit our thinking of big cities to Mumbai only; even Delhi is a big city and I’m sure it has its discipline. Yesterday, we went to Ahmedabad and were surprised to find out how big the city is. People are equally educated and very practical. Ahmedabad being one of the big cities of India surprisingly has the lowest crime rate compared to its counterparts. My mother’s family was from an army background and my mom grew up everywhere. My father’s family was from Peshawar. You have to learn on your own, whether in a big city or small town. It all depends on your upbringing.
Parineeti: But in big cities your are exploited more. You have so many successful people from mall towns. Arjun- Broadmindedness doesn’t really exist in small towns. You are limiting this argument to the youth only. In Mumbai, boys and girls can be friends. Parineeti-(Laughs). That’s the problem about small towns. Everyone knows everyone. In Ambala, you can’t be caught hanging out with a guy. The biggest problem is where to meet. People start talking and asking where the relationship will head. Relationships are a
taboo in small towns.
Arjun (Teasingly): In a small town you won’t be caught Parineeti.
Parineeti: Ya that’s true, my dad won’t get a call (laughs). In Ishaqzaade, we both come from a small fictional town called Almor. We have highlighted these issues in the film. If Ishaqzaade would have been based in a city, the issues would have been different.
Arjun: Then maybe we could focus on live in relationships.
