MM Keeravani earned global recognition after bagging an Oscar for Natu Natu (RRR) at this year’s Academy Awards. He is happy that his win has been able to highlight Indian musicians especially regional artistes who aren’t particularly associated with mainstream cinema. He also expressed that the state of music in the country is sad.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, MM Keeravani mentioned that in India, music is still very much limited to movies and music artists have to depend on them to reach a wider audience. He stressed that if a film is a hit then the songs will do well and songs don’t shine on their own, he further added that India needs more independent musicians.

MM Keeravani even compared how the music is created in the West as compared to India. He mentioned that in India, first one person creates the music, another writes the lyrics, a third person sings it, a fourth person arranges it and a fifth person will feature in the video, who is mostly going to be a popular actor or a movie star. Whereas in the West, one person does everything and is often the face of the video too, hence they have a huge fan base globally. He noted that in India we don’t have music stars, but playback singers.

The Oscar winning musician also highlighted that changes are happening in the industry but they are very slow and artists must adapt to them quickly. He mentioned that back in the 70s audiences used to love to listen to a melody but today they also want a visual experience, so it is important that the artist also becomes the star of his or her video.

After RRR, MM Keeravani will be composing the music for Auron Mein Kaha Dum Tha starring Ajay Devgn, Tabu and Jimmy Shergill. This film is directed by Neeraj Pandey.
