Nude photoshoot, sexist ad, AIB roast: FIVE times Ranveer Singh courted controversy

Ranveer Singh is known for his vibrant personality and flamboyant fashion sense. He is also someone who wears his heart on his sleeves. Although the actor has rarely engaged in arguments and fights, there have been times that his decisions, actions and comments have stirred up several controversies. From posing nude for a photoshoot to featuring in a sexist ad to participating in a charity roast, here are FIVE times Ranveer Singh courted controversy.

Ranveer Singh left his fans and followers shocked after he appeared in a nude photoshoot in 2022 for a magazine. The actor received a lot of backlash on social media after he shared the pictures on his handles. Not only this, an FIR was also lodged against the actor by an NGO accusing him of obscenity. Mumbai police had reportedly summoned him for questioning. The actor later reportedly claimed that the picture was tampered with.

Ranveer Singh, who is known to express his thoughts freely and never mince his words, found himself in a soup for his tweet. He had reportedly used the catchphrase, 'Eat, Sleep, Conquer, Repeat' to caption a picture of himself where he was seen posing with some of the popular cricket legends and current team members. Following this, the Bollywood actor received a legal notice from WWE Wrestler Brock Lesnar’s advocate Paul Heyman for apparently using his catchphrase. The advocate replied to the tweet and pointed out that his client holds copyright over the catchline.

Ranveer Singh, who is known for his bold fashion choices, featured in a commercial for a clothing line in which the actor was seen dressed in office wear with a woman over his shoulder. In the ad, the duo was watched by a grinning butler on the side, and the tagline of the ad said, 'Don't Hold Back. Take Your Work Home’. The commercial received a lot of flak from the audience for its sexist nature. Many on the internet also found the ad to be offensive to women for its objectifying nature. Reportedly, the Bollywood actor later issued an apology and the ad was taken down.

Ranveer Singh, along with his wife Deepika Padukone, received flak from the Sikh community for the way Anand Karaj ceremony was conducted at their destination wedding at Lake Como in Italy. According to reports, an Italian Sikh organisation has said that the wedding was against the religion’s code. The Italian Sikh body was not pleased with the Guru Granth Sahib being brought from a gurdwara in Brescia to the wedding villa in Lake Como, 150 km away, which is sternly prohibited by the Akal Takht.

In 2014, Ranveer Singh, along with his BFFs Arjun Kapoor, Karan Johar and others participated in a live stage show called AIB Knockout where he played roast master. The show attracted widespread public backlash from religious groups, Bollywood actors, and certain right-wing political activists and was eventually taken down. An FIR was filed against the celebrities, claiming the show was vulgar, obscene and pornographic.
