Mumbai hoarding collapse: Soni Razdan, Vijay Varma express shock over the incident on social media
In a tragic incident that has shaken Mumbai, a 100-foot-tall illegal billboard collapsed at a petrol pump in the Ghatkopar area during a dust storm and unseasonal rains, killing at least 14 people and injuring 74 others. This catastrophic event, which occurred on Monday, has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for accountability from various quarters, including actors Soni Razdan and Vijay Varma.
The collapse of the hoarding has brought to light severe lapses in regulatory oversight.

According to civic officials, the billboard was erected without the necessary permissions, a revelation that has outraged many. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), responsible for urban governance in Mumbai, is under intense scrutiny for this alleged oversight.
Soni Razdan took to social media platform X, tagging the BMC in a post that questioned the delayed discovery of the billboard's illegality. She expressed her frustration, writing, "Why do they only discover the hoarding is illegal AFTER it's killed 8 people and injured others? And isn't the body or persons responsible then liable for prosecution?" Razdan's tweet underscored the need for accountability and legal action against those responsible.

Vijay Varma also shared his dismay, resharing a video of the collapse on his Instagram Story with the caption, "Oh no." His reaction echoed the sentiments of shock and sorrow felt by many.

Mini Mathur expressed her anger and disappointment on Instagram, lamenting the lack of value placed on human life in the country. She criticized the systemic corruption that allows such illegal structures to exist unchecked, stating, "Whose hoarding is it? Who allowed it to stand there for years? The blame game this week will lead to no answers, and the corrupt nexus that allowed the open flouting of rules will never be taken apart. Disgusting."

According to a PTI report, in response to the tragedy, local authorities promptly initiated search and rescue operations at the Chheda Nagar petrol pump, the site of the billboard collapse. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the scene on Monday evening and has mandated a structural audit of all hoardings across the city to avert future incidents. Additionally, he announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the families of each victim.

Reportedly, a case has been registered against Bhavesh Bhinde, the owner of M/s Ego Media Private Limited, along with others, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. This legal action highlights the seriousness of the charges and the need for a thorough investigation.
The incident has ignited a wider discussion about urban safety and regulation enforcement in Mumbai. Both citizens and public figures are demanding stricter measures to prevent future negligence and loss of life. Under intense scrutiny, the BMC must deliver answers and implement tangible actions to rebuild public trust.
