It’s hard to disregard the similarity that the Anubhav Sinha-directorial 'Mulk' shares with films like 'Queen' (2014) and 'Pink' (2016). All these well-intentioned films have an ensemble cast and stories that make one believe that movies can empower people and change the status quo. Now, the recently-released 'Mulk' joins this list, as it paves the way for ‘small’ films that are ‘big’ on ideas.
The makers of 'Mulk' believe that the film speaks to both the establishment, as well as a large section of the audience.
The courtroom drama has held a lot of promise since the first teaser came out, and worked its way up at the box office, proving that powerful content backed by intense performances is the need of the hour. The film, which has received a positive response from critics and audiences, has also fared well at the box office. It has done noteworthy business on weekdays as well as weekends.
Says
Anubhav Sinha, “My rationale has always been that content is supreme. If you have good content backed by strong performances, you can release your film any time and the audience will still love it. The fight for realism driven by specificity is back and I’m happy Mulk is taking a lead on that front.”
Deepak Mukut of Soham Rockstar Entertainment, adds, “'Mulk' has only grown from strength to strength, courtesy strategic publicity propelled with positive word of mouth, which has translated in unanimous capture at the box office. As a company, we have always strived to back content-driven cinema and not just commercial potboilers as diversity is integral to the business we are in. From 'Sanam Teri Kasam' (2016) to 'Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana' (2017) and now 'Mulk', we have tried to set new benchmarks within the industry. We are also excited to foray into yet another territory and have taken upon the onus of launching Utkarsh Sharma in Genius, which releases later this month.”
'Mulk' stars Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, Prateik Babbar, Manoj Pahwa, Neena Gupta, Rajat Kapoor and Ashutosh Rana.
