kolkata: a scintillating presentation in hindi of midsummer night''s dream featuring characters attired in modern clothes and songs set to contemporary music held the audience in thrall here on tuesday night. the drama, presented by times of india and padatik, a cultural organisation, used colloquial phrases, exciting choreography and imaginative props sent the audience, who otherwise would not have thought of watching a shakespeare play, into raptures.
director kunal padhi said "i had always felt that midsummer night''s dream has the propensity to be transformed into a musical play as the play inherently has a rhythm in its construction and plot. moreover, the shift from the real to the unreal, depicted so exquisitely, added to the myriad colourful characters gives a total completeness to the simplicity of the plot." "i have refrained from attempting to present it in the traditional way... the audience sees a representation of the spirit of the play, performed with the feelings that are very modern and in the way we perceive it now," he said. the background score was written by well known musician bikram ghosh.
