The elections, which were originally scheduled to be held on May 11, were postponed after violence threatened to break out on the night of May 10.

Speaking to Chennai Times, Director R K Selvamani, who is contesting the elections this time, said,"The association has a total of 1450 members. Of these, 850 members have voting rights. Almost 100 members are from other states and therefore will not come down to vote as each of the three other southern states have their own directors' associations. Another 100 members are out of town shooting in various places. So, only 650 members are expected to cast their votes."
The elections, which are held once in two years, have generated a lot of heat between the various groups. Around seven groups are contesting the elections this time and the most prominent among these is the Bharathiraja group, which claims to have the support of around 565 members.
A group led by Director R C Sakthi and a group of assistant directors, who call themselves the Naalaiya Iyakkunargal Ani, are the other main contenders.
Trouble arose on Saturday night when the respective groups were putting up banners and hoardings in support of their candidates.
"We were putting up putting up our banners and the Nalaaiya Iyaakunargal Abi members were putting up theirs. They used derogatory terms to criticise us to which we objected to, after which the fight broke out," Selvamani claimed.
"A little while later, people not associated with the association arrived in a vehicle and started threatening us," the director alleged.
Refuting the allegation that assistant directors were not being treated with respect, RK Selvamani said,"The allegation is baseless. Even I've been an assistant director myself. These days, everybody is educated and nobody ill treats another."
