mumbai: eminent artiste of yesteryears who have left indelible mark on marathi filmdom, are coming together for an unusual cause -- to save a cinema hall that has stood a witness to many of their jubilee hits. the rallying point for the artiste who include the veterans like sulochana, ramesh dev, jayashree gadkar, machhindra kambli and many others, is 'bharatmata', the five decade old movie theatre situated in lalbaug-parel in central mumbai, the part of the metropolis which once came alive with sirens of textile mills and the hustle bustle of the mill hands.
the historic theatre which has been screening marathi movies in its lean days, supporting and maintaining the cultural identity of maharashtrians in an ever increasing cosmopolitan milieu, today faces extinction following a notice of vacation by the national textile corporation (ntc), owners of the land.
