Playback singer Manna Dey, who resides in Bangalore was admitted to a hospital on Saturday. He’s diagnosed with chest infection. His condition is critical. At the time of going to press, Dey was taken for a bronchoscopy. The 94-year-old legend was to record an album in the memory of his wife Sulochana Kumaran, whom he lost to cancer last January.
But he fell ill some days ago and was under medical supervision at his home in Kalyani Nagar.
Since his condition didn’t show any signs of improvement, he was hospitalised.
Around noon on Sunday, social networking sites were abuzz with reports of his demise. Until singer
Abhijeet Bhattacharya informed that he had learnt from Kavita Krishnamurthi that Dey had been taken for bronchoscopy. And according to doctors, though critical, he was stable.
The veteran songster -- who has rendered hits like
Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua (
Shree 420, with Lata Mangeshkar) Ae Mere Pyaare Watan (Kabuliwala), Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (Dil Hi Toh Hai), Ek Chatur Naar (Padosan, with Kishore Kumar), Ae Meri Zoharazabeen (Waqt) and Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli (Anand) – was honoured by the Government of India with the
Padma Shri in 1971, Padma Bhushan in 2005 and
Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007.
Priyanka Chopra’s father, Dr Ashok Chopra, continues to be critical. He is diagnosed with cancer and is said to be on life support.
