It might be the wedding season but Manish Malhotra's attention is not completely on his bridal clients. For the first time in his 26-year career, the famous designer is designing the costumes for a play. And it's not just any play but the musical adaptation of K Asif's epic 1960 film 'Muhgal-e-Azam'. Talking about the experience, Manish told a tabloid that he did not take up the project for money or even to prove a point, calling it a project of passion instead.

Manish said that for its time, 'Mughal-e-Azam' was a very glamorous film with unreal opulence and he has tried to recapture that through his signature approach by embroidery instead of sequins, and relying on rich brocades, silks and velvet.

Manish and his team have prepared 550 costumes for the entire cast of the play and it took them three months to design it all. The play is being produced by Feroz Abbas Khan and will premiere at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA).
