Debuted With a Bold Role at Just 21

Mandakini made an unforgettable entry into Bollywood with Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), directed by Raj Kapoor. The film’s bold scenes, especially the infamous waterfall sequence, stirred controversy but catapulted her to instant stardom. Few know that she was only 21 at the time and had to defend herself against widespread moral policing.

Real Name Was Yasmeen Joseph

Born as Yasmeen Joseph to an Anglo-Indian family in Meerut, she adopted the name Mandakini when she entered films. She was spotted by Raj Kapoor, who renamed her and launched her into stardom — a transformation that changed her life forever but also distanced her from her conservative background.

Alleged Links With Dawood Ibrahim

One of the darkest chapters in her life came when photos of Mandakini with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim surfaced in the early 1990s. Although she never admitted to having any personal relationship with him, the controversy shadowed her career and significantly affected her public image.

She Married a Former Monk

In a twist no one expected, Mandakini married Dr. Kagyur T. Rinpoche Thakur, a former Buddhist monk who had also appeared in commercials. The two settled down quietly in Mumbai, far from the glitz and chaos of Bollywood.

Now Runs a Tibetan Yoga and Wellness Centre

After quitting films in the mid-1990s, Mandakini embraced spirituality and healing. She and her husband now run a Tibetan yoga and wellness center in Mumbai. She also teaches meditation and occasionally appears in public spiritual events — a striking contrast from her once-controversial public persona.
