NEW DELHI: A package of seven movies based on Sarat Chandra Chatterjee's <I>Devdas</i> will be one of the highlights of the 33rd International Film Festival that gets underway in the Capital from October 1.

<div class="section1"><div class="Normal">NEW DELHI: A package of seven movies bases on <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Devdas</span> - including the first in Bengali by PC Barua (1935) and the latest by Sanjay Leela Bansali - would be one of the highlights of the 33rd International Film Festival, 2002, that gets underway in the Capital from October 1.<br />Part of the Indian retrospective, the <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Devdas</span> package includes the two <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Devdas</span> made by PC Barua (Bengali and Hindi, 1935), Vedantam Raghavaiah''s <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Devdasu</span> (Telugu, 1953), Bimal Roy''s 1955 rendition with Dilip Kumar in the lead, another Telugu version, <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Devdasu</span> by Vijaya Nirmala (1974), Shakti Samanta''s <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Debdas</span> (Bengali, 2002) and Sanjay Leela Bhansali''s <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Devdas</span> (Hindi, 2002).<br />The 10-day festival would feature films and documentaries from several countries including South Africa, Germany, Italy, Vietnam, Brazil, France, Netherlands, Japan and Croatia.

Also in the offing is a 10-movie retrospective of Italian maestro Marcello Mastroianni as part of foreign restrospective.<br />The Indian panorama includes movies such as Revathy''s <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Mitr - My Friend</span>, Tabu-starrer <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Chandni Bar</span>, Mrinal Sen''s <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Aamar Bhuvan</span>, Farhan Akhtar''s <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Dil Chahta Hai</span>, <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Kannathil Muthamittal</span> from Mani Ratnam, Buddhadeb Dasgupta''s <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Manda Meyer Upakhyan </span>and Jahnu Barua''s <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Konikar Ramdhenu</span>. A special screening of main stream Indian films would also be on with blockbusters such as <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Gadar - Ek Prem Katha, Lagaan, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham</span> and <span style="" font-style:="" italic="">Raaz</span>.<br />Unlike previous film festivals, this year the festival would take deep look at the commerce and business behind film-making. According to Deepak Sandhu, director, IIFF''02, special attention has been given to film commerce.<br />"A film bazaar has been set up in association with National Film Development Corporation, Ficci and CII," Sandhu said. A series of seminars would also be organised to discuss various issues concerning film commerce and marketing. </div> </div>
