in a film industry where everything works on a set pattern, lilette dubey adds an oscar twist to the tale. lilette features in three films which were strong contenders as india's official nomination for the oscars this year monsoon wedding, bawandar and gadar. add to the list zubeidaa, which was in contention for nomination last year, and the oscar connection spans four out of five films in which the actress has featured since she shifted base from delhi to mumbai five years back.
cut to the immediate present. among other things, lilette is waiting for clinton. no, it's not another twist in the tale. it's the title of a film directed by sanjeev sivan (brother of santosh asoka sivan) for which lilette is shooting. well, we don't know whether the film will spark off an oscar buzz, but what we do know is that lilette finds favour with bollywood. the word is that, had lilette landed in the city of dreams 25 years back, she could well have been the madhuri dixit of that time! "this is what anil sharma, the director of gadar, told me," informs lilette. it's not as if lilette didn't receive her share of film offers, she did. but she decided to engross herself in english theatre and shun the movies. then, one fine day, lilette's husband said, "you can either live in your ivory tower or reach out to the masses." lilette decided to test tinsel town's waters. one of the first things which lilette did after landing in mumbai was to act in the play siren city which, in a subtle way, exposes the underbelly of mumbai society. this brings us to a tale of two cities. "mumbai is very professional, but there is little warmth in relationships. and that is what i miss most about delhi," offers lilette. meanwhile, lilette finds herself on firm filmi footing. and lilette's so-near-yet-so-far oscar connection? maybe, waiting for clinton will pay off!
