Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dhoom 2 and others: When Bollywood churned out equally successful sequels

Sequels in Bollywood remain a double edged sword for most parts. While on one hand, you have a fixed formula (and sometimes the same star cast) to fall back on, there is also an added pressure of recreating history, since the audience has already lapped up the first part, and will not accept anything mediocre. While sometimes sequels fall flat on their face, Bollywood also boasts of some of the best sequels seen in the last few decades. We take a look at some...

2/6

Lage Raho Munna Bhai

What could be better than Munna Bhai becoming a fake doctor, handing out jadoo ki jhappis like no one's business? Simple, make him follow the path of non-violence, as set by Mahatma Gandhi. Tough call for a gangster we reckon, but when he hopelessly falls in love with a radio jockey, he lies about being a true Gandhian. Although he ends up hurting her, he also undergoes a change and genuinely begins helping people. And he has his ever so dependable sidekick Circuit for company. Starring Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan in lead roles.

3/6

Dhoom 2

Mr A, a fearless thief, steals valuable artefacts and teams up with a girl he is attracted to, but cannot trust. Close on their heels are three police officers trying to apprehend them. Even though John Abraham set the standards high when it came to smoking hot antagonists on screen, Greek God Hrithik Roshan effortlessly stepped into his shoes. A must watch if you like chic, sleek, fast paced thrillers. Co-starring Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Bipasha Basu and Aishwarya Rai (in a never before seen avatar.)

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2

The monologue King is back! This time however, he has no Liquid for company, rather there is Chauka and Tarun. The three best friends/flatmates fall in love at the same time with different women. However, their relationships soon turn toxic and make them realise the dark side of love. While Anshul's girlfriend is a rich brat who has a tough time laying down boundaries, Chauka's girlfriend comes from an orthodox family and can't muster the courage to come out to her parents. On the other hand, Tarun's girlfriend, outwardly independent, turns out to be extremely 'manipulative' who comes across as a 'gold-digger'. Starring Kartik Aaryan, Sunny Singh, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Omkar Kapoor, Ishita Raj Sharma and Sonnalli Seygall.

Tanu Weds Manu Returns

Introvert Doctor Manu hopelessly falls in love with Tanu in the first part, and while she might have taken her time to come around, the two get married eventually and move to London. Four years later, Tanu is bored of her routine life and 'boring' husband and files for divorce from Manu. In India, Manu 'falls in love' with Kusum Sangwan, a young Haryanvi student athlete and the duo plan to wed. Seething in anger, Tanu decides to break them up and win back Manu before the duo tie the knot. Starring Kangana Ranaut in a double role, along with Madhavan.

Drishyam 2

Vijay Salgaonkar is back and so are his ordeals! After plotting a perfect cover up for an accidental murder by his adoptive daughter, Vijay and his family are finally coming to terms with the fact that life is limping back to normalcy and that their days of living in fear are over. However, a key witness to the cover up will emerge, even as the victim's mother and former IG of police refuses to let go, and this time has a brilliant friend and IG, Tarun Ahlawat to dig deeper and frame the Salgaonkars. Starring Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Tabu and Akshaye Khanna in lead roles.
