Laal Singh Chaddha, Laxmii and more: 5 most controversial movies of the year and where to watch them

Controversy and Indian cinema go hand in hand. Whether it is about a particular individual or an (in) famous event, many movies get mired in controversy that can eventually work for or against it. As the year comes to a close, here's recapping some of the most controversial movies of 2022 and the medium you can see them on.

2/6

Laal Singh Chaddha

An official remake of the cult Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, the movie is the heartwarming story of a simple man called Laal, who has an intellectual disability, yet the biggest of hearts. Over time, Laal goes on and becomes a part of many historical events, all the while forging close bonds with everyone around him. The movie, directed by Advait Chandan and co-starring Kareena Kapoor Khan became the biggest target of the Boycott Bollywood trend leading to a dismal performance at the BO. You can now watch the movie on Netflix.

3/6

Laxmii

The horror comedy, starring Kiara Advani and Akshay Kumar is the story of a man who while on a visit to his hometown, gets possessed by the spirit of a transgender, out to get revenge. The movie ran into trouble for depicting the transgender community in a poor light - eventually, the makers also had to change the project's name to Laxmii from Laxmmi Bomb as some religious groups had an objection to the original name. The movie was directly released on Disney+ Hotstar.

4/6

The Kashmir Files

Claiming to factually portray one of the biggest genocides in the world, the movie is about a college student Krishna, who while trying to uncover the reason behind his parents' killing in Kashmir, discovers a web of blood, deceit and political mud slinging as the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits becomes one of the most brutal and heartbreaking chapters of Indian history. Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the movie stars Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi and Darshan Kumar amongst others and has been caught in the news ever since its release, the latest addition being at IFFI Goa. You can watch the movie on ZEE5.

5/6

Kantara

After weeks of when and where, Kantara finally arrived on OTT last month. However, the lead song Varaha Roopam ran into copyright issues and was initially scrapped from the OTT version, before it was eventually brought back in. The Kannada blockbuster that has been breaking BO records one after the other, is the story of a Kambala champion who runs into problems with an upright DRFO officer, Murali. Directed by Rishab Shetty, who also plays the main lead in the movie, the flick is set and filmed in Keradi in coastal Karnataka. Streaming on Prime Video now.

Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva

After setting the box office on fire, this fantasy drama is now available on Disney+ Hotstar. The Ayan Mukerji directed magnum opus starring real-life couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt ran into trouble when it showed Ranbir's character entering a temple wearing a pair of shoes. However, the same was soon cleared up by Ayan Mukerji and the movie went on to send cash registers ringing at the BO. The second part of the movie is expected to go on floors next year.
