Karni Sena's Suraj Pal Amu detained in Gurugram as preventive action

GURUGRAM: In a shocking twists of events, the district police arrested Karni Sena's general secretary Suraj Pal Amu on Thursday evening. He was taken into preventive arrest by Gurugram cops at around 5pm. He was detained from his residential society on MG Road.


Amu (51) was in news recently after he announced a reward of Rs 10 crores for beheading Deepika Padukone, who at that time was portraying the title role in the film Padmavati. He actively protested against the release of the film in Gurugram and Haryana. The name of the film has since been changed to Padmaavat. He had even resigned from his post of the chief media coordinator of the state unit of BJP after CM Manohar Lal Khattar did not meet Karni Sena representatives.

A team of around 7 cops, headed by ACP (DLF) Anil Kumar reached Amu’s residence at around 4:50pm. Initially, he resisted the arrest and even threatened the cops of dire consequences, reveal sources. However, the ACP initiated the arrest. Amu is now booked under sections 107 (apprehension of breach of peace and tranquility of an area) and 151 (arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offences) CrPC.



DCP (East) Kuldeep Singh that this has been done on the orders of higher authorities and to maintain law and order in the city. He will be produced in front of DCP (headquarters) Deepak Gahlawat on Friday.

Amu was arrested after the security agencies sensed that he could give instigating speeches to make situation worse in Gurugram. According to sources, he had been making statements in media which caught him attention, but were detrimental to law and order. On Thursday morning, he announced that he will visit cinema halls and will distribute flowers to the viewers. However, he was warned against this security agencies and was warned that he might be detained for this. At this he announced that he will go to NOIDA instead. Later in the day, he called a news channel’s OB Van to the society where he lived. Taking abundant caution, cops arrested him to avoid any unrest.

According to senior cops, Amu was given enough warnings, including by the chief minister himself. Sources reveal that Khattar had called Amu on Thursday night and had asked him to not instigate any violence. The CM said that such protests in a BJP ruled state were tarnishing the party’s image. However, the Karni Sena leader did not pay heed to this. A similar call was also made to BJP district head Bhupinder Chauhan too by the CM.

Also, he called a female news channel anchor baby on air. Amu said “listen to me baby” while he was present at the debate. At this, the anchor flagged to issue to National Commission of Women while still being on the program. The commission took suo motu cognizance on Thursday and issued a notice to Amu.
