If star power is what attracts you to the theatres, then get ready for the biggest month of the year for Bollywood films. Beginning on Friday, when Humraaz hits the silver screen, to Yeh Hai Jalwa at the end of the month, the desi film industry has lined up a series of biggies.
We’ll start with Humraaz, which has Bobby Deol reuniting with the director duo of Abbas-Mustan after the super success of Soldier.
While Deol Jr’s co-star is Ameesha Patel, Akshaye Khanna brings the third angle to the love triangle and plays the role of a dancer in the film. Humraaz boasts of a good musical score composed by Himesh Reshmiya — yes, the same guy who has composed the Nikamma number.
The second week of July will feature what everyone is waiting for — the release of Devdas, which has Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff in key roles. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus was supposed to be released in June, but with more than a 1,000 prints of the film being made, including 500 for the overseas market, the film’s release had to be pushed forward.
Following Devdas to the screen in the third week of July is Om Jai Jagadish, Anupam Kher’s directorial debut. As is obvious from the title, the movie is about the family of Om, Jai and Jagadish breaking apart and then coming together. Produced by Vashu Bhagnani, the film reunites the jodi of Fardeen Khan and Urmila Matondkar, who has been missing from celluloid action for a long time.
July will end with a comedy, Yeh Hai Jalwa, which has Salman Khan and Ameesha Patel essaying the lead roles. Directed by David Dhawan, Yeh Hai Jalwa is set in London, where Salman Khan goes in search of his parents.
All in all, July promises everything from comedy to tragedy and drama to melodrama. Here’s a tip: Stay glued to your seats, but don’t forget to pass the popcorn!
