Jaya Bachchan opened up about her marriage to Amitabh Bachchan during her recent appearance at the We The Women event. Taking a look back on the 52-year journey she has shared with her husband, she explained that Amitabh’s personality is strikingly different from hers and that’s exactly what drew her to him. She described herself as outspoken and expressive, while Amitabh prefers restraint and silence, speaking only when required and with perfect timing. According to Jaya, their contrasting natures became the foundation of their bond. With a light laugh, she added that if she had married someone like herself, the relationship “wouldn’t have survived”.

Marriage as ‘Delhi ka laddoo’

Jaya Bachchan didn’t shy away from presenting marriage in a realistic and humorous way. Comparing marriage to the famous phrase “Delhi ka laddoo”, she said it’s difficult both ways whether one gets married or remains unmarried. Jaya Bachchan stressed that the legal structure of marriage should not be the defining factor of any relationship, during a conversation with Barkha Dutt.

Jaya also touched upon why she prefers that her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, not rush into marriage. She emphasized that marriage comes with responsibilities and compromises that require emotional maturity and clarity not age or social pressure. She believes young women should first find independence and fulfilment in their own identity before stepping into marriage.Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan tied the knot on June 3, 1973, and went on to become one of Bollywood’s most enduring couples, sharing five decades of companionship.
