The remake rights of three Hrishikesh Mukherjee slice-of-life films — the evergreen Golmaal (Amol Palekar, Utpal Dutt), Khubsoorat (Rekha, Rakesh Roshan) and Chupke Chupke (Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra) have been picked up for remakes.Sohail Maklai has bought the rights of Chupke Chupke and he intends to make it with Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt. Says Sohail, “If all goes well Ajay will play Amitabh and Sanju will play Dharmendra.”
Producer Romu Sippy who holds the rights of all the three Hrishida movies confirms having sold their rights.
However, he recalls selling Chupke Chupke to a yesteryear television actress, who in turn has perhaps sold it to Sohail.
Boney Kapoor and Pradeep (Tutu) Sharma have purchased the rights of Khubsoorat and Golmaal. A trade source says, “Actually the deal on Khubsoorat was done a while ago. But Boney is still to announce the name of the actress with whom he will do the remake. As for Golmaal, Tutu (Padmini Kolhapure’s husband) has the rights to this film, but if he doesn’t do the remake, he may end up re-selling it. This is also a lucrative business these days.”
Incidentally, there is a huge rush amongst current day producers, who are completely bankrupt as far as saleable scripts go, to pick up the remake rights of established yesteryear hit film-makers.
