For an accomplished actor like Irrfan, each role that he undertakes, has to be unique and something that he hasn't done before. Known for doing a variety of roles in his long career, both in the West and in India, Irrfan says that when he picks a role, he wants it to stay with him long after the movie releases. Speaking to a daily, he says, 'I'm the one who has created these standards and I am happy about that because that is what I expect of myself, too. I can't do formula films. I believe that a film should speak to the audience once they leave the theatre. That's what I have been trying to do. It is a great thing, when people have expectations of you. We have a fantastic audience. They have surprised me and how. I exist because of them. They have appreciated and acknowledged my films. Sometimes as an actor you keep on doing other people's stories. Someone chooses the story, and you have to fit in. It's not your own.'
