MUMBAI: Indian People's Theatre Association IPTA observed the first death anniversary of actor AK Hangal on August 26. Hangal was in his 90s when he passed away after prolonged illness.

His contribution to theatre, films, art and culture and his participation in the Indian freedom struggle is noteworthy,” said vice-president Nivedita Baunthiyal.
The choir led by Kuldip Singh sang Hangal Sahab's favourite IPTA songs. Baunthiyal and the theatre workshop students narrated incidents that had been published in his autobiography. Director Ramesh Talwar and actors Sulbha Arya and Ila Arun shared fond memories.
Hangal's son Vijay, a reputed cameraman, recalled memories of his father that dated back to the freedom struggle. He recalled visiting Karachi jail carrying food for Hangal Sahab who had been imprisoned along with several party members. Vijay also read out a poem he had written after his father received the Padma Bhushan in 2006.
